Increase your WIN XP speed

Hello friends in this and the next two post i am going to give you tips following on which you can increase your WIN XP speed.

Since defragmenting the disk won't do much to improve Windows XP performance, here are 23 suggestions that will. Each can enhance the performance and reliability of your customers' PCs. Best of all, most of them will cost you nothing.

1.) To decrease a system's boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software -- the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine -- and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer.

2.) If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance.

3.) Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you're not sure, here's how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it's important that the computer be uninterrupted and virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with larger disk drives.

4.) Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a "searchable keyword index." As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system. The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP's built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for.

Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you're a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it.

Here's how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching." Next, apply changes to "C: subfolders and files," and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as "Access is denied"), click the Ignore All button.

5.) Update the PC's video and motherboard chipset drivers. Also, update and configure the BIOS. For more information on how to configure your BIOS properly, see this article on my site.

6.) Empty the Windows Prefetch folder every three months or so. Windows XP can "prefetch" portions of data and applications that are used frequently. This makes processes appear to load faster when called upon by the user. That's fine. But over time, the prefetch folder may become overloaded with references to files and applications no longer in use. When that happens, Windows XP is wasting time, and slowing system performance, by pre-loading them. Nothing critical is in this folder, and the entire contents are safe to delete.

7.) Once a month, run a disk cleanup. Here's how: Double-click the My Computer icon. Then right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Disk Cleanup button -- it's just to the right of the Capacity pie graph -- and delete all temporary files.

8.) In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to "DMA if available" for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel.

In the next post i will give you some more tips for increasing your WIN XP speed.

The 45nm effect

As all we know chips are the most important circuitry part of processors and processor speed is also depends on the size of the chips. In recent years chip making technology has been moved from 90nm to 65nm,but today it moved up to 45nm.The worlds largest processor making company Intel is shrinking chip sizes like never before.Intel has invested $1.5 billion in this project.Intel's 45nm chip is believed to be smaller, faster, and more power efficient than all its predecessors. The "45nm effect" implies that by using nano technology size of the chips can be reduced up to 45nm.

Hence, in order to reduce the chip size we have to reduce the transistor size, but as the transistor get thinner, electrical leakage takes place in the transistors.Hence while shrinking the size of the silicon-di-oxide gate dielectric, transistor gate leakage was one of the most difficult technical challenges that industry faced. To get rid of this problem,Intel has developed a hafnium-based material with the high k property (where k is the dielectric constant of the material),which helps deliver transistors with very low leakage current and high performance.Reducing power leakage and improving performance are the most important features of Intel project. The company's most advanced manufacturing technology today is 65nm,which went into commercial production last year.In the current stage Intel has about fifteen 45nm product design in various stages of development.

The resulting chips that are formed after "45 nm" technology will have 820 millions transistors to put in for parallel computing, energy management and graphics.Today market is still waiting for applications of this 45nm chip. The chips that are produced on 45nm technology will be faster ,consume less energy, contain more transistor and be cheaper to mass produce. All of this results in better PC,laptop and server processor speed, while reducing the amount of power leakage from transistors and hence overall efficiency is increased. In today's server environment people want to consolidate. This is an opportunity for software developers across the globe to implement parallelism in their applications. But this is not the limit, very soon we see microprocessors that use up to 32nanometere chips from this industry. The future of smaller and more intelligent chips, according to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors or ITRS(http://www.irts.net/reports.html),will be 32nm,22nm and then 16nm technology.

Real Time Embedded Systems

Hello friends in this post i am going to explore one of the most interesting topic in operating system that is Embedded Systems.

Today embedded computers are the most prevalent form of computers in existence. You can found these devices anywhere from car engines and manufacturing robots to VCRs and microwave ovens.Generally these systems are designed to work on a very specific task thats why they are provided with limited features.Today these embedded systems vary considerably, some are general purpose computers that are running on standard operating system such as UNIX with special purpose application to implement the functionality, others are hardware devices with a special purpose embedded operating system providing just the functionality desired.
Within the last few years the use of embedded systems is increased to a great extent. These embedded systems can work as standalone units and as a member of a network. It is believed that embedded systems almost always run real time operating systems.A real time system is used only when rigid time requirements have been placed on the operation of processor or the flow of data.Hence it is used as a control device in a dedicated application. In other words we can also say that real time systems has well defined time constraints. All the processing must be done within the defined time constraints otherwise processing will fail. A real time systems functions correctly only if it returns correct results within the time constraints.

Microsoft Vs Adobe

Now their is a hot news after the summer olympics at Beijing, the web war between the Microsoft Corp and Adobe Systems Inc over the Internet's next big competition. Microsoft's Silverlight technology and rival Adobe's Flash format are currently locked in a race over who delivers the world's online video, but the ultimate prize may be who powers the next generation of Web software.Using Silverlight, the NBC site offers a glimpse of what is possible with future Web applications because viewers are able to watch up to four videos at once or follow the action with an online commentary that runs alongside the video.
More than 40 million US viewers have gone to NBC's Olympics site to watch some of the 2,200 hours of live footage from the Beijing games. All those viewers need is a Silverlight player on their browser if they do not have one already.By building up Silverlight's user base, the world's largest software maker is looking to win over developers who see Web platforms such as Silverlight and Flash as a new way to deliver powerful Web-linked programmes incorporating rich graphics.Currently, those platforms are mainly reserved for multimedia applications such as Google Inc's popular YouTube site, which runs on Adobe's Flash technology. After years of selling licenses for software that runs on a computer's hard drive, Microsoft is facing a new batch of competitors providing software free as a service through the Web browser in exchange for online advertising.Taking advantage of Flash, Silverlight and other more simple Web-coding technologies such as AJAX, a new breed of interactive Web software -- known as rich Internet applications (RIAs) -- has emerged.
Adobe plans to take the next step with tools called Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR), which allow programmes to run on the Web or offline on a computer's desktop. On the other hand, Microsoft is approaching Silverlight from the opposite direction. It plans to take advantage of its legions of outside developers experienced in writing for its ubiquitous Windows operating system. The next version of Silverlight, being tested now and due later this year, will support Microsoft's .NET framework -- tools used by developers to create desktop applications that work on Windows.Microsoft introduced its first version of Silverlight a year ago, but Gartner's Valdes said the second version is the first real form of Silverlight since the inclusion of .NET support turns the technology into a great revolution.

Let see who will win this race,Microsoft or Adobe.

Microsoft buy ciao.com

Now finally the Microsoft has agreed to buy Greenfield Online, owner of popular European price comparison website ciao.com, for about $486 mn to boost its Internet search and e-commerce business in Europe. As all we know earlier this year Microsoft failed to buy Yahoo after a log battle. After purchasing ciao.com it is believed that it should help it build a more consumer-friendly, results-oriented search engine. As all we know that Internet search is dominated by Google, which has 62 per cent of the global search market and 79 percent in Europe.

Microsoft has a 2 percent market share in Europe and 9 per cent worldwide, behind both Google and Yahoo.Buying ciao.com was an important step in Microsoft's attempt to distinguish itself by providing search results more useful to consumers, particularly shoppers, than those thrown up by a Google search.Ciao.com is active in seven European countries and attracts 19.6 mn unique visitors per month in Europe, more than twice as many as rival kelkoo.com, according to ComScore, thanks to its large network of members who contribute product reviews. To attract more users, Microsoft also plans to reward consumers who buy products through its shopping sites by giving them cash back, extending a trial started in the United States a few months ago.

Microsoft's offer of $17.50 per share betters an earlier proposal by media-focused US buyout firm Quadrangle Group to acquire the company for $15.50 a share, and represents a slight premium to Greenfield's closing price of $17.25 on Thursday. On August 26, Greenfield had said it had received a $17.50 per share offer but did not reveal from whom. The latest offer represents a premium of about 10 percent over Greenfield's closing share price on August 25.Microsoft said it had agreed to sell Greenfield's main business, which surveys consumer opinion online and sells the results to market researchers, to an unnamed financial buyer. The companies expect both deals to close during the fourth quarter of 2008. Completion of the Greenfield sale to Microsoft does not depend on Microsoft's disposal of the online survey business, the two companies said. This deal really help Microsoft in competing with google.

Obama's thinking on outsourcing

The hot news of this time is the Obama's thinking over the nature and impact of outsourcing. On his thinking Indian technology companies said Barrack Obama has not a complete understanding of what the America is going to loss if outsourcing from other countries stops. In his acceptance speech, following his nomination as the Democratic candidate for the US presidential post, Obama said that he, unlike the Republican candidate John McCain, "will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America."

If Obama indeed does that in the event he becomes US president, it would adversely impact the massive flow of work that currently comes to Indian IT and business process ousourcing firms. Though Indian IT companies have been trying to geographically diversify their revenue source, almost 60% of it still comes from the US.But technology companies here pointed out that if Obama were to do any such thing, it would only hurt America.

On this explanation of Obama,Nasscom said that Indian software exports are unlikely to be affected by this stance of Obama as offshoring is a key economic decision for US firms.Anant Koppar, an IT industry observer, also said the US does not have enough skilled workers and scope for scalability. "So outsourcing is the only option for them," he said. Meanwhile, India's software exports, led by companies like Infosys, TCS and Wipro. draw over 70% of revenue from the US market.Facing the heat from US presidential hopefuls who blamed "shipping jobs" to China and India for rising US unemployment, the India Inc had on previous occasions launched a counter-offensive telling Americans that the industry is in fact creating new work opportunities for them.
